πŸ’¬ Questions for Your Doctor

Advocate for South Asian-Specific Care

Many South Asian patients do not receive proactive screening for diabetes and cardiovascular risk. These questions help you advocate for the care you deserve at your next checkup.

1

"Given my South Asian background, should we use the 23.0 BMI threshold for diabetes screening?"

Why ask this: The ADA recommends this lower threshold for Asian Americans specifically.⁡

2

"Can we check my waist circumference using the South Asian-specific cutoffs?"

Why ask this: Men: 90cm, Women: 80cm β€” versus general 102cm/88cm.

3

"Should I get an A1C and fasting glucose test now, even though I feel healthy?"

Why ask this: South Asians may be at risk before symptoms appear.

4

"How does my family history of diabetes affect my current risk?"

Why ask this: First-degree relative with T2D significantly raises your risk.

5

"Is my LDL cholesterol appropriate given the higher cardiovascular risk in South Asians?"

Why ask this: SA populations often have more atherogenic LDL particle patterns.⁴

6

"What frequency of screening would you recommend for my profile?"

Why ask this: Annual screening from age 25 is often appropriate for high-risk SA individuals.

7

"Do you have experience working with South Asian patients around diabetes prevention?"

Why ask this: Culturally competent care improves outcomes significantly.
